How does the AI Visibility Checker work?

We query the Common Crawl index, which is the primary open data source used by most AI companies for training data. We check 6 recent snapshots to see how many of your pages have been crawled, analyse the HTTP status codes of those pages, check your robots.txt for AI crawler directives, and calculate a composite visibility score from 0 to 100.

What is Common Crawl?

Common Crawl is a non-profit organisation that regularly crawls the web and makes the data freely available. Their archive contains petabytes of web data spanning years of crawls. Many AI companies, including OpenAI and Google, have used Common Crawl data as part of their training pipelines. Our tool queries their index API to check for your domain.

Can I block AI crawlers from my site?

How often is the data updated?

Common Crawl typically releases new snapshots every few weeks. We query the 6 most recent snapshots, which generally span the last 3-4 months. Results are cached for 24 hours to provide fast responses while keeping data reasonably fresh.

What does the visibility score mean?

The score (0-100) is calculated from three factors: page count in the latest snapshot (how many of your pages were crawled), status health (proportion of 200 OK responses versus errors), and consistency (how many of the 6 snapshots contain your pages). A higher score means greater presence in AI training data. Strong is 80+, Moderate is 60-79, Low is 40-59, and Weak is below 40.

Do you check all AI systems?

We focus on Common Crawl because it is the most widely used open dataset for AI training. While individual AI companies may also run their own crawlers, Common Crawl data is the most comprehensive publicly queryable source. We also check your robots.txt for directives targeting GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, and other known AI crawlers.
